Thou shalt have no other gods before me

When the University of Canterbury decided they wanted some promotional material, they produced this, a profile of alumna Joanna Nicholls-Parker. It’s really all highlights, but I’ve produced a very short highlights package for you.

One important insight:

This is the environment in which I…come to terms with the fact that political transparency can counter commercial enterprise.

Sage words — we can count ourselves lucky that transparency hasn’t got too much in the way of commercial enterprise in Christchurch recently.

I truly wish, too, I could have made it to the Fast Track ‘Meetings with Remarkable Men’, featuring Bob Parker. The image she reproduces — there are 64 more of them out there somewhere! — shows the kind of deep and powerful thinking I missed out on:

Truly, read the whole article, keep coming back to it, come across it when you are least prepared: you’ll learn something. Consider this the beginning of a journey deep into human consciousness.

After reading this article, I am truly looking forward to the completion of her MA thesis, provisionally entitled “Philosophy by ‘Setting the Stage for Heroes’”. I’m actually not joking, either.

Hey — this may seem like an incidental point — but should we be worried that the mayoress is promoting some sort of cult of personality centring upon her apparently omnicompetent husband? Or is that totally normal?

    That shit is deep, Yo.

Everyone understands the need to explore global humanitarian issues that engage with the heroic, athletic, cultural, and philosophical perspectives that the developed world must address in the coming era of multiculturalism.

But very few are bold enough to state it publicly.

    Go Jo.

There’s a lot of truth in that BJD. I await the onrush of knowledge with bated breath.

With these kind of skills, who would dare level the charge of nepotism against her and Bob, suggesting that perhaps she shouldn’t have been a hired curator for various CAG shows?

In that “new media” image, Bob does actually looks like he is bowling in the highlights.
